Nicole is a true horse ally and a gifted instructor who has taught "Being With Horses" at the University of Utah and teaches English at Roots Charter High School. At Liberty, Nicole uses the Liberty Method developed by Carolyn Resnick to build trust and form meaningul relationships with our horses.

Liberty Sanctuary is a leading equine nonprofit dedicated to protecting America’s most vulnerable horses and banning the slaughter of our cherished American equines. We rescue equines from the slaughter pipeline and offer comprehensive care, training, and adoption programs. Liberty is also home to more wild horses than any sanctuary in Utah. We offer horsemanship clinics to the public and working student opportunities. Liberty is home to over 30 rescued horses cared for by over 60 volunteers. Additionally, we partner with Dr. Rebecca Bailey and the Polyvagal Equine Institute to offer therapeutic neuroregulation to those with mental health challenges including veterans with PTSD, patients recovering from substance abuse, people with disabilities and domestic violence survivors. Our national advocacy efforts include launching SAFEACT.org to support the Save America's Forgotten Equines Act currently in Congress. RESCUE OF RESERVATION BABES FROM THE NAVAJO NATION

Liberty took part in an incredible rescue of over 31 equines from the Navajo Nation. This mission was spearheaded by Dawn Olivieri and All Seated In A Barn. Liberty was honored to play a role and help welcome over 11 wild horses to the great Western state of Utah. In the end, 4 baby horses remained home @libertysanctuary and 7 horses and 3 donkeys were accepted at other UT sanctuaries. These babies came without stopping at auction or kill pens, reducing stress to the animals and avoiding diseases that are rampant in the slaughter pipeline. Their parents were sent to slaughter. We are honored to be a part of this effort and urge you all to visit SAFEACT.org to let your legislators know you insist we ban the export of majestic American horses for slaughter.

Filmmaker and activist Ashley Avis, through her Wild Beauty Foundation, has launched "The Lost Horses," a campaign aimed at ending horse slaughter by pushing for the passage of the SAFE Act. The campaign launched in late October 2025 and uses powerful cinematic public service announcements (PSAs) to raise awareness about the slaughter pipeline that ships American horses to Mexico and Canada. Porter is a 2017 bay mustang gelding currently under saddle and truly a special horse. He is a kind, loving, and sweet-natured gelding who may take a little time to warm up to strangers, as is typical of mustangs, but forms a deep bond once trust is established. Porter excels working at liberty and thoroughly enjoys it, yet he performs just as well under saddle. He has been ridden indoors, outdoors, in round pens, and out on the trail.
