When Kelly moved her family to the Heber Valley, young Tatum wanted to participate in 4H but she didn't have a horse. Kelly heard Liberty rescues horses and inquired whether we may have a horse suitable for her 11 year old daughter. Our founder thought about it, and said Max would be perfect. Max was Debra's personal horse who was recovering from an injury and helping some of the rescues acclimate. She loaned Tatum the horse. Since then, their relationship has grown and they truly bonded. Deb was also impressed with Tatum's horsemanship and work ethic. She works at a barn daily to be able to afford boarding him there. On May 13, 2026, Liberty presented Tatum the Liberty Award For Equine Excellence and gave Max to Tatum with help from the American Quarter Horse Association who is preparing transfer documents. Knotty Girlz provide d the lovely red halter, lead rope and reins, Tractor Supply offered $100 in equine goodies, Redmond Equine contributed supplements and Harward Farms generously gave Tatum & Max 20 bales of hay. Now it's your turn because caring for horses can be expensive! Every dollar goes to Tatum & Max. Thanks so much to Kristen Kenney and Channel 2 KUTV News, Heber LIfe Magazine & Mountain America for highlighting their story. DONATE TO TATUM & MAX!

Liberty Sanctuary was honored to take part in the 2026 National Wild Horse & Burro Conference in Park City and be part of the voices working to improve the lives of our wild herds! We are grateful for the opportunity. Thanks to Janette and Linda https://www.saveamericaswildhorses.org/
Liberty Sanctuary is a leading equine nonprofit dedicated to protecting America’s most vulnerable horses and banning the slaughter of our cherished American equines. We rescue equines from the slaughter pipeline and offer comprehensive care, training, and adoption programs. Liberty is also home to more wild horses than any sanctuary in Utah. We offer horsemanship clinics to the public and working student opportunities. Liberty is home to over 30 rescued horses cared for by over 60 volunteers. Our national advocacy efforts include launching SAFEACT.org and helping to energize The Lost Horses campaign to support the Save America's Forgotten Equines Act currently in Congress. Our work has been featured on ABC News, Fox News, Good Things Utah, Good Day Utah, Salt Lake Tribune, Park Record, NPR, and more. "I cannot overemphasize how wonderful my experience has been at Liberty Sanctuary and am so grateful to have found community, purpose, and horses with you guys. ... The ethics you set forth at Liberty are admirable, and the way you, Scott, Devon, Dacia, Searra, Beila, etc. maintain your ranch, care for the horses, and fight for their safety is inspiring! "
